Support for youth and young adults
Drug and alcohol use is becoming more common with younger people, many reporting substance use on average of age 12. Risk factors for substance use in youth include a family history of substance use or addiction, parental substance use, childhood trauma, mental health issues, poor social environment and peer pressure.
The substances most commonly used by adolescents and teens are:
- Nicotine (such as dipping, smoking or vaping)
- Alcohol
- Marijuana
- Prescription medications like opioids (oxycodone and hydrocodone), benzodiazepines (Xanax and clonazepam) and stimulants like Adderall
- Illicit drugs like cocaine, heroin, methamphetamines (meth), inhalants, hallucinogens and ecstasy.
Substance use can result in severe adverse outcomes including school dropout, legal troubles, family conflicts, sexually transmitted diseases, infections such as HIV and hepatitis, mental health issues, suicide and even death.
Supported by our Blue & You Foundation, the UAMS Health Six Bridges Clinic offers assistance to Arkansas residents between the ages of 12 and 21 who are dealing with substance dependency.
